The Quantum Computing School is a free two-day, pre-PhD ‘bootcamp’ designed for undergraduate and Honours students interested in pursuing a PhD in quantum science and technology.
The program provides an introduction to research in quantum computing, including key areas such as algorithms, architectures, and devices. Participants engage with academic researchers, industry representatives, and current PhD students to gain insights into research pathways and career opportunities.
Beyond the formal sessions, curated networking and activities create space for participants to connect, exchange ideas, and build relationships..
The School is held annually in Sydney, with the next School scheduled for early 2027.
Who can attend
- Honours and undergraduate students based in NSW or interstate currently enrolled in a science- related degree (e.g. physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, or related disciplines)
The program includes:
- Presentations from academic researchers across core areas of quantum computing
- Panel discussions with industry partners and current PhD students
- Networking opportunities with peers, researchers, and industry representatives
- Access to research environments and facilities (where available).
Hear what a PhD is really like
At the Quantum Computing School, you’ll hear directly from current PhD students about their experiences – what they were thinking at your stage, how they overcame any doubts they had, and their reflections on their decision now. It’s a chance to ask the questions you don’t usually have the opportunity to ask, with access to answers and insights grounded in real experience.

Feedback from the 2026 program indicates strong participant impact:
- 81.8% of participants rated the program 10/10
- 72.7% said they are more likely to pursue a PhD after attending
- 54.5% reported an improved understanding of quantum computing
But beyond the numbers, students described a shift in confidence, clarity, and ambition:
“It completely reframed how I think about where quantum sits today. What stood out is that quantum computing is no longer just a theoretical milestone, but increasingly an engineering problem.” Mehakpreet K, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Aerospace), The University of Sydney
“I particularly enjoyed seeing the device and hardware side up close, especially the physical setups behind what’s usually only discussed abstractly.” Arkajit G, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Computer and Autonomous Systems), University of Wollongong
“Great to meet people in and out of the labs who are passionate about quantum research. I’m inspired by this experience and excited to see where it leads.” Oscar W, Bachelor of Science (Physics and Mathematics), The University of Sydney
“An amazing experience that helped me better envision my future and learn more about the industry.”
Leo B, Bachelor of Quantum Engineering (Honours) / Physics, UNSW Sydney
