Report: The State of Australian Quantum

admin

The National Quantum Strategy, released in May 2023, sets the vision that Australia will be a leader of the global quantum industry in 2030. The State of Australian Quantum report looks at Australia’s early progress on that journey.

Quantum will have far-reaching strategic, economic and social impacts. Australia’s quantum technology industry could be worth almost $6 billion and employ 19,400 workers by 2045. The adoption of quantum technologies by other industries could add trillions of dollars in value to the global economy. Quantum can promote step-changes in a range of areas that impact the lives of all Australians and will help us address challenges like:

  • transitioning to net zero

  • developing new pharmaceuticals, chemicals and industrial materials

  • creating the next generation of medical sensing technologies.

The State of Australian Quantum report explores the successes of local researchers and businesses and discusses challenges we still need to address. The report also highlights efforts across the Australian Government and state and territory governments to support the growth of our quantum ecosystem by:

  • investing in infrastructure to support research, development and manufacturing

  • attracting international investment

  • developing strategies and policies to invest in quantum.

Universities and research groups are working to innovate in quantum technologies. Australian businesses are competing with the world’s best. Private investment in the quantum sector continues to grow and existing industries are adopting quantum technologies.
